Details / precisionsHi! I suspect -- strongly suspect -- that a friend of mine has attracted a romance scammer. Unfortunately, I do not know on which social media platform he's been communicating with her. The scammer claims to be the 36-year-old daughter of a rich businessman in Akron, Ohio (my friend is in his 60s and lives in a rural community). She's provided photos of a very attractive young woman. She tells him she's worth something like $3 million and wants to get married and produce a grandchild for her father. Recently, she told him she was going to Dubai for business meetings. She's told him she wants to buy a lake house with him, etc., etc. While I'm sure this is a scam, I can't figure out the "I'm a millionaire desperately wanting to get married" angle leads to her asking for money. Thoughts?

A lot of romance scammers will claim they're rich to let their victim's guard down. They may even go as far as to make a fake bank, claim they can not access it and give the login info to their victim to do them a favour. This subconsciously builds trust in the fake relationship but ALSO the victim is lead to believe the funds in the fake bank are real. They're rich so they can't possibly scam them! So later along the line the victim is more willing to lend money, thinking they have nothing to lose because the scammer (the person they love and trust) will pay them back.

Maybe later, the scammer will then ask the victim to pay for the lake house legal and tax fees etc because she can't do it herself overseas. There are many excuses they could give to convince your friend to give her money. (fees for the fake marriage, fake lawyer fees to gain her inheritance or half of her wealth for him, gold bars she needs to ship, unexpected emergencies that only he can help her with etc) And if he truly believes he's in a relationship with the scammer he'll do it - the scammer will urge him for "their future together"...

There is a scam called the "pig butchering scam" that has a similar set up with the rich woman - a pretty lady will long con romance their victim to think they're wealthy and well off. Her hobbies are "investing" and "crypto trading". Once enough time has passed, she'll suggest their victim too get in on crypto and invest for their life together. Only the crypto site is...
