Scam contentsThis was a **man-in-the-middle / business email compromise scam**.

At first, there was normal and legitimate email communication between a buyer and a supplier. Later, a third party inserted themselves into the communication by using very similar but fake email addresses. This person impersonated both sides, pretending to be the supplier when writing to the buyer and pretending to be the buyer when writing to the supplier.

The scammer forwarded messages between both parties, making each side believe they were communicating directly with the other. In this way, the scammer gained full visibility into the order process, the status of the communication, and the timing of the payment.

At the key moment, the scammer changed the payment instructions and sent their own payment details instead of the legitimate ones. Because the communication appeared credible and continued naturally from the earlier conversation, the victim had no immediate reason to suspect fraud.
Comment / ReviewAs a result, the payment was sent to the scammer’s account under the belief that it belonged to the legitimate supplier. The real supplier only discovered the issue later, after noticing that the payment had not been received even though the order had already been processed and the shipment had been sent.

In summary, the scam worked by deliberately interfering with a real business email conversation, creating fake email identities that closely resembled the real ones, and fraudulently redirecting the payment to the attacker’s account.
