If you were offered a job too-remember these types of checks are done AFTER you do an interview or see the property in person and meet the landlord. The scammer will often claim these fees are refundable, but you may just be left with a subscription and pay more than expecting. Scammers are most likely doing the "affiliate link abuse" scheme. |
| Comment / Review | Scammers will often create a fake ad (rental, job, or pretend to be interested in a car) and claim you need a credit report before going forward. Often they claim it will be "refundable" later. The scam may go different ways - often it can simply be to get your personal and credit card information and or charge bogus fees. Another common scam is an affiliate link abuse scam. The scammer have a link or creates a fake website that will forward you to sign up on a different credit monitoring site (like transunion, freecreditscore etc) when you sign up, the scammer gets commissions from their affiliate link. You are also then put on a subscription from the site that may be hard to cancel.
