hi, just wondering if you have any information regarding what happened after the fact. this just happened to someone i know and am looking for ways to help them get their money back
You'll be bombarded with fake firms or recovery scammers claiming they can help you. They are called recovery scammers and they prey on people like you trying to get their (or loved ones) money back.
Bottom line is ONLY proper authorities can get any money back to the victims. This means government, not some stranger online that claims to be a "hacker".
Have her or help her report everything to the FTC (if you're in the US) but don't expect any updates or reports anytime soon. The law moves slowly. A lot of these crimes are over seas and authoriteis may have a hard time to get cooperation.
Sometimes scammer claim they're authorities and have the money. They're relentless scum of the earth, so be sure to look out for that.
